'A Little Bird Told Me' became the title of Erika deVries's new installation, featuring a group of photographs and mix-media murals and wall sculptures. The motifs she has selected for this work are women, girls, self-portraits, gardens, and landscape. The bird of the title is an observer, companion and storyteller in this fantastical indirect narrative of loss, regeneration and abandoned.
A Little Bird Told Me
M.Y. Art Prospects is pleased to present the second summer installation
project by Erika deVries, a Brooklyn-based artist, followed by "Breathe"
installation by Marc Lepson. Mr. Lepson and Ms. deVries - a husband-and-wife
team--share and exchange their artistic visions.
'My mother, always aware of my seemingly covert actions and experiences,
responded to my question, -How did you know?- with, -Oh-' a little bird
told
me,'- says the artist, Erika DeVries.
'A Little Bird Told Me' became the title of her new installation, featuring
a group of photographs and mix-media murals and wall sculptures. The motifs
she has selected for this work are women, girls, self-portraits, gardens, and
landscape. The bird of the title is an observer, companion and storyteller in
this fantastical indirect narrative of loss, regeneration and abandoned
control.
Inspired by imaginative and exotic 19th century period wallpapers, 'A Little
Bird Told Me' refers to the history of decorative arts as well as the
domestication and exotification of landscapes and female bodies.
DeVries has held solo exhibitions in New York, Chicago and Tucson. She has
participated in group exhibitions nationally in New York, San Francisco, and
Tucson, and internationally in Osaka, London and Kassel, Germany. She holds
an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. DeVries is also a
performance artist.
