Held in
conjunction with the Museums Zwerger exhibition.
For centuries, Vienna has served as both an inspiration and a breeding ground
for some of the art worlds most noteworthy talents.
Today, the romantic citys cultural legacy continues to invoke such virtuosos
as renowned Viennese illustrator Lisbeth Zwerger. Since
bursting onto the scene in 1977, Zwerger has become one of the preeminent
illustrators of classic childrens fiction. Her interpretations of
Noahs Ark, The Wizard of Oz, The Gift of the Magi, and the works of Hans
Christian Andersen combine delicate washes of watercolor
with remarkable depth and detail. These jewel-like paintings have brought
Zwerger international acclaim as well as numerous awards,
book-fair prizes, and recognitions of excellence.
The artist, whose recent
adaptation of Alice in Wonderland received a similarly warm
welcome, is the focus of a special exhibition, Lisbeth Zwerger's Land of Oz,
featuring illustrations for L. Frank Baum's Wizard of Oz at
the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, on view from June 29 through
September 2, 2002.
