SEVEN SEQUENTIAL SPACES
Gallery N. von Bartha is proud to announce the forthcoming exhibition of
Douglas Allsop at the Southampton City Art Gallery, Opening July 25th, 2002.
Entitled Seven Sequential Spaces, the exhibition reflects the way Allsop's
work divides and transforms the Gallery spaces. With the use of devices such
as the "Blind Screen" installations and "Reflective Editors", Allsop reveals
and conceals the architecture of a room. The "Blind Screens" partition the
rooms and alter the appearance of the space and the viewers as they move
about. Allsop explores the power of lines, dots and squares in his
photographic series "Fast Surface". He employs screens as lens attachments
to superimpose grids over the images. Allsop has produced a new series of
"Reflective Editors", manufactured with great precision using a computer
driven router to cut the intricate designs. The panels create an optical
illusion whereby the viewer's gaze is extended past the physical object to
focus on the reflection of the surroundings, emphasising the world this side
of the screen.
Allsop's work is concerned fundamentally with the viewer's perception of
space and, above all, the purity and accuracy of the production of his work.
Such concerns are particularly relevant to architecture, which is perhaps
why he has been referred to as a "spatial engineer".
Over the past thirty years Allsop's wrork has been shown extensively
throughout Europe. However, this is the first museum-scale exhibition to be
held in England, which is incredibly overdue. It provides an opportunity to
consider a substantial body of Allsop's work, including a slide installation
and other new work produced specifically for this exhibition.*
