new body of work appears to fall effortlessly into the self-perpetuating logic of this economy
"Like so many others, I had become a slave to the Ikea nesting
instinct...I'd flip through catalogues and wonder: what dining setting
defines me as a person?" This is Jack's (Ed Norton's) voice-over in an
early scene of the movie Fight Club. The accompanying shot features Jack
reading a magazine; his gaze fixed on the centrefold of the latest edition
of a homewares catalogue - his new pornography. On the back cover of the
magazine we see an image of a domestic interior and an overlayed caption
which reads: "use your imagination."
At first sight, Geoff Kleem's new body of work appears to fall effortlessly
into the self-perpetuating logic of this economy. His handcrafted domestic
objects possess the appearance of display items lifted straight from the
showroom floor - yet something doesn't add up. A closer look ensures that
recognition falters, slowly giving way to uncertainty. Constantly
mis-representing themselves, the pieces on show cheat our expectations in a
sly disclosure of their seduction techniques.
Infinitely speculative, Kleem's work hijacks the visual rhetoric of display
systems and their commodities. It unlocks the potential of creative
consumption, leaving us to wander in the indefinite spaces between
representation and reality - the 'real' space of the imagination.
