Berlin+Tokyo Communication Art 2010
During the exhibition To–Be | Tokyo+Berlin Communication Art 2010 28 artists of Japan and Germany reflect on intersections and differences of being and becoming within their cultural environments.
Starting on August 7th and lasting until August 29th the second exhibition of this kind organized by Kunstfaktor e.V. is planned to take place at the Free Museum Berlin featuring 14 artists from each Tokyo and Berlin.
History
Inspired by the artists Tatsumi Orimoto (Tokyo) and Thomas von Arx (Berlin) 19 artists from Berlin and Tokyo came together in 2009 for their first exhibition called “Berlin+Tokyo Communication-Art”.
Orimoto initiated an open concept keeping freedom of choice and responsibility in the artist’s hands thus creating an exhibition situation with a momentum of its own. With art contributed by the individual artists on the spot, the exhibition’s concept took
shape spontaneously during a kind of symposium.
Younger and older, established and less established artists from various disciplines were invited.
Continuation
The concept worked well in terms of exhibition quality, as well as founding of new collaborations and ideas, which is why we would like to apply the same principle with “To-Be”– continuing our experiences in Japan 2009 – in order to deepen the communication about art and to form a summit with our show in 2010. It is planned to continue the exhibition series in 2011 in reference to the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Prussian-Japanese friendship and trade treaty. The collaboration with both cities in this regard could vitalise the partnership between the two on a cultural level.
Goal
Art in our eyes is supposed to function as engine for communication, thus stimulating independent strategies of exchange and networking. A unique dynamic for the exhibitions is provided by linking these entirely differing social systems and forms of art interpretation: on one side, the collective oriented Japanese society where art for the most part is understood as a service and craftsmanship opposed by the individualistic Western society with its understanding of the artist as the creating genius. The various overlaps, hybrids and grey areas show the direction of East-Asian/European convergence – not only in artistic terms.
Overtness
The exhibition will not just be a comparison between German and Japanese forms of art – the way it will be set up is going to be negotiated interdisciplinary and interculturally.
We understand our project as a dynamic process?– an open stage for unfolding inspiring collaborations between cultures, the arts, artists, and their audience. While visiting the exhibition a program of performances, dance, music, film, and lectures will point out similarities and differences between the two cultures and their artistic and everyday life.
Focus of General Programme
Similar Examples of various forms of self-organisation from Japan and Germany shall be compared within an open video- and discussion platform during the exhibition. The audience shall be given the chance to participate in the process during artist talks and workshops. All pieces are currently in the making process of the individual artists. One example: During the stay in Tokyo, the Berlin artists discovered a gardening initiative against the neglect of their neighbourhood. This triggered the idea of inviting the Berlin artist and garden activist Ulrike Solbrig to examine this topic for the upcoming exhibition To–Be 2010 in Berlin.
Deepening
The cultural exchange of this project will not be limited to the exhibition itself. The visit of our Japanese colleagues in an around the metro area of Tokyo was a fixed part of the concept. The provided hospitality and living everyday life together offers the artists a framework for conversations about art, politics, and social life also conveyed by celebrating Japanese and German cuisine. Perhaps this dialog will enter into the work of the artists too.
An exhibtion catalogue will be published.
Information about the Organizers in Berlin
Kunstfaktor Produzentengalerie e.V. – art direction and organization
"You are an Art Factor!“ – Kunstfaktor e.V. is a since 1997 Berlin based project and exhibition forum organised by artists which does not want to set boundaries to the understanding of art of the individual.
Kunstfaktor e.V. finances itself by means of member fees, private sponsoring, lots of honorary participation, and public funding. It has organised over 50 exhibitions and projects and collaborated with over 100 artists or artist groups. It also provides consultancy and support for its members.
Besides single and curated theme exhibitions, the focus of attention lies with artistic room concepts, art projects in public spaces of culturally underdeveloped areas, international artist exchange, and since 2008, art education in collaboration with schools.
Freies Museum Berlin (Lawyers for the Arts e.V.) – Cooperation partner and exhibition space
The Freie Museum Berlin –founded 2009– is an institution which contributes itself to a tight collaboration with artists and their projects.
The Freie Museum Berlin is located in a 500 m distance to the Neue Nationalgalerie at Potsdamer Straße which connects the former “Westcity” with East Berlin and its “Mitte” [center].
Large scale, single artist exhibitions as well as group projects are organised and executed by the museum. Artists are given the opportunity to develop, execute, and internationally promote their artistic ideas and projects with the help of the museum and its own artist management facilities.
