Everybody learns from Disaster

Villa Elisabeth, Berlin

40 artists

comunicato stampa

On the last weekend of this year’s Berlin Biennale, we will squad the Villa Elisabeth in Berlin-Mitte. Around 40 artists, old hands and newcomers, will present painting, sculpture, installation, video and performance. With “Everybody learns from Disaster” we are celebrating the dauntlessness of a generation of artists that is not afraid to fail. Why? Because, for us there is no alternative to art. Therefore, in this exhibition we have taken the curational part into our own hands and the public is invited to meet the artists and their works.

The old villa in the heart of Berlin gives the impression of a long forgotten National Museum. On its three floors we are presenting a broad spectrum of works, as well as happenings and concerts. Most of the featured artists come from the orbits of the two art universities (UdK and KhB) which gives the exhibition a strong Berlin flavor. This is strengthened further by a number of international artists who work and live in Berlin.

What we want is an interplay of experienced and young artists, between those whose works are being sold successfully by galleries and those that are at an early point in their artistic career and sometimes live close to poverty. This way, we can overcome the isolating tendency of the art market. Jointly, we declare the Villa Elisabeth to be the stage for our view on the here and now.

Our answer to the motto of this year's Biennale is: We are producing art despite the crisis, yet we are showing works without restricting the focus. For us, the critical examination of the world is not limited to a specific set of artistic approaches and positions, as it is true for all artists that ''it is the function of art to make reality impossible/implausible'' (Heiner Müller). Art's reflection of contemporary reality, like the Real itself, is constantly on the move. This ongoing change must be made visible. For us, the presentation of art works is a crucial part of the artistic process, because art and artists need exchange. Therefore, in contrast to the usual course of exhibitions, on both exhibition days artists will be present at the venue to allow real interaction.
