Beuys: Energy Plan

Museum Schloss Moyland, Bedburg-Hau

Drawings from the Museum Schloss Moyland

comunicato stampa

Curated by Prof. Dr. Jean-Christophe Ammann, Dr. Bettina Paust, Dr. Nicole Fritz

For the first time ever an exhibition will be devoted to Joseph Beuys' central idea: the "Energy Plan". Joseph Beuys developed this idea in his comprehensive graphic work in the 1950s and 1960s.

The exhibition will feature a selection of ca. 200 drawings in the Museum Schloss Moyland. Some of these have hitherto been unpublished and will be divided into ten different theme rooms all devoted to the determinant idea behind these works: the "Energy Plan". The Museum Schloss Moyland houses the largest collection of Joseph Beuys' early works worldwide.

Joseph Beuys himself described the major experimental area inherent in his early drawings as fundamentally significant for his whole artistic career. Here he developed the thoughts on the "Energy Plan" that were to prepare the way for his ideas on a new "expanded art concept" and "social sculpture".

The ten theme areas in the exhibition present the most important aspects of the "Energy Plan" in an exemplary manner.

Starting point is the physical understanding of energy which Joseph Beuys examined intensively in his graphic works. Against the background of his philosophy of the world as an organic whole, Beuys set out in search of spiritual energy potentials. He discovered them, amongst others, in Shamanism, Christianity, anthroposophy, superstition and in the world of animals. These physical and spiritual energies flowed into the "Energy Plan", the central point for his whole work.

A trio of curators is responsible for the exhibition:
Prof. Dr. Jean-Christophe Ammann (former director of the Museum of Modern Art, Frankfurt am Main), Dr. Bettina Paust (artistic director of the Museum Schloss Moyland) and Dr. Nicole Fritz (curator of the Kunsthalle Krems). Working together with a circle of younger generation Beuys scholars they have put together a selection of his drawings from the huge collection held in the Museum Schloss Moyland.

The exhibition and accompanying catalogue underline the importance of the Museum Schloss Moyland as a Joseph Beuys centre. It will be showing a selection from its unique portfolio works before the Castle building is reopened to the general public in autumn 2011. This will be predominantly devoted to presenting the works of Joseph Beuys.

Catalogue
The bilingual catalogue (German/English) contains approximately 320 pages and 100 colour photographs. It is the first compendium devoted to the "Energy Plan" in the whole of the literature on Joseph Beuys. The catalogue will be published within the framework of the so-called fair-use regulation (ยง 58 UrhG). That means it can only be obtained during the duration of the exhibition in the Museum Schloss Moyland and cannot be marketed via third parties. It can be ordered online along with the purchase of an admission ticket at www.moylandshop.de.

Accompanying programme of events
We shall be offering a large number of events to accompany the exhibition. These include a seminar and talks given by persons involved in the project, as well as other art education offers.
