'INDIAN SUMMER AT BRESTER STATION'
FEATURING NEW WORKS BY IMOGENE DRUMMOND AND MELINDA HACKETT.

Imogene Drummond and Melinda Hackett Show at Tonje Gallery
'New Works,' an exhibit of neo-organic paintings by Imogene Drummond and Melinda Hackett, will be shown at Tonje Gallery, 4 Main Street, in Brewster from September 5 to November 1, 2002. A reception to meet the artists will be held on Friday, September 20, from 5-8 pm. The public is invited to attend.

Garrison artist Imogene Drummond's elemental works on paper explore nature's essential regenerative forms, such as seeds, pods, and eggs. Drummond says her paintings, 'like pages in a diary of paint,' are about 'a search for transformation and wisdom.' Her potent works investigate the possibilities of changing core psychic wounds or holes into centers of creativity. These works explore archetypal symbols such as the Uroboros or Great Round, and the Omphalos or World Navel. For example, black holes can be seen as transformed into cosmic wombs, wells, or wheels of creation. Such symbolism deals with unlocking and releasing the flow of life that continuously animates the world. For Drummond, the act of painting is a similar, albeit personal, act.

Recent painting expeditions to sacred sites and spiritual landscapes in Vieques, Puerto Rico and Santa Fe, New Mexico Fe influenced Drummond's beautiful and evocative works. Art collector and dealer Carl van Brunt has said that Ms. Drummond's work reminds him of Arthur Dove's in its condensed vocabulary and simplicity of form. He also commented favorably on 'Drummond's build-up of impasto and the glowing-coal effect of her color.' Drummond's vital works draw upon archetypal symbols of the collective unconscious, as well as from various cultures throughout human history. Her art expresses a contemporary recognition of the intuitive truth of symbols from civilizations now long extinct, but linked to us still by the wonder and mystery of life itself. North Salem artist Melinda Hackett's intriguing oil paintings are fanciful, lushly decorative and elegant. In her new works, she creates delicate and densely patterned botanical-like environments. Recognizable vegetative forms abstracted from nature and a sense of lacey underwater imagery distinguish her tapestry-like work. Hackett considers her work to be about 'the Mind's Eye.' She says that she 'plays around with forms that are organic in nature to explore them, to represent them, to make a painting that will interest her and hopefully will interest the viewer.' For her, art is a very personal experience. In painting, she invents a self-referential universe derived from nature. She is interested in the relationships that evolve on the canvas, such as between line and color, and color and movement.

Tonje Gallery owner Richard Ruchala stated that he chose Hackett because 'she does with circles what Mondrian did with lines and angles.' 'She's obsessed with circles,' he stated, 'and I like that about her.' He stated that he likes 'the way her circles move in a dynamic, not static, way.' Hackett's new work is largely influenced by the Austrian designer and architect Josef Frank. Her work also draws upon the tradition of European arts and crafts celebrating the home and garden.
