The show juxtaposes abstract and surrealist styles
The STAG Art Gallery, located at Clinton and Rivington Streets on Manhattan's Lower East Side, is showing forty-three paintings and sculptures by Saundra Schwartzkopf and Dallas-based artist Ginger Fox. The show juxtaposes abstract and surrealist styles. Information is available on the web. The gallery recommends making reservations for a private viewing, but welcomes unscheduled visitors from 11AM to 7PM on Saturday or Sunday.
Saundra Schwartzkopf is a prolific artist known primarily for her oil paintings that explore the use of pure color. Her application is painterly, her palette consistently vibrant. Included in the show are her three-dimensional pieces incorporating organic elements and found objects. Works span two series and chronicle the San Francisco Bay area during the dot-com era and New York before and after 9/11.
Ginger Fox's painting style is influenced by the Dutch still life painters' use of light and shadow, and plays on the ideas of the Surrealist school of painting. In Fox's paintings, the viewer is drawn to familiar subject matter and invited to interpret their own reality. Fox presents a surreal idea though placement (almost suspension) of familiar objects, using light and shadow as additional tools.
The STAG Art Gallery and its neighbor, 71 Clinton Fresh Food, are among several new businesses that have opened along Clinton and Rivington Streets, transforming Manhattan's Lower East Side. Call 212-995-0812 to reserve a private viewing of works by Saundra Schwartzkopf and Ginger Fox, or visit the gallery between 11AM and 7PM on Saturdays or Sundays. The show runs through November 23.
