LOREN BEVEN graduated from Wimbledon School of Art with a BA (Hons) in painting in 1990. Since then she has shown consistently in London and Southeast Asia.

Beven is known for her monumental sea paintings and this body of work is inspired by her recent research trip to Kerela, India. Depicting the coastal waters of the Arabian Sea, Beven has created a number of works that describe the inherent tranquillity of her locations. Their gentle ambience is expressed through a clear three-part horizontal composition where subtle variations in tone and colour define each piece. For example, a deep ochre bordering on dusky orange or a light beige beach is set against a muted blue or grey sky. They are atmospheric and set in repose.

Despite being captured during monsoon time, Beven has photographed her subject in the lulls between the storms. Her seas are flat and skies clear, emphasising their state between moments of extreme tumult. By using photography to capture her initial image Beven has referred to the idea of memory and the recording of it:
Photography is a means of recording memory and the paintings are a memory, a personal re-interpretation of India.

Thus, we have before us a set of sea paintings that are quiet and subtle, that withhold a sense of what had been, and of anticipation. They represent a recording of a specific time and place through a combination of first-hand observation, mechanical reproduction and an interpretation of that through paint.
