PLUS ULTRA is as pleased as punch to present a solo exhibition by
Helsinki-based artist Jani Leinonen. Incorporating recent work by an anonymous
artist, David Humphrey, Jani Leinonen, Liisa Lounila, Sami Lukkarinen,
Alun Williams, and Robin Winters, Leinonen offers an exhibition as experiment set up to explore the conventions of the contemporary New York art market. With artists representing a wide range
of name value and career success, he sets
up an environment that challenges viewers to participate directly in
placing a value on art and on artists.
Upon entering the gallery, viewers are faced with seven equal-sized frames
fitted with opaque glass. Only the artists'
names are visible until the posted amount of money is deposited in the
frames' built-in coin slots, at which point the
glass becomes transparent for 15 seconds.
At the beginning of the
exhibition, the price to view each work is
determined by the artist's position in the art market. After the first
day, however, a tally starts, and the prices begin to
follow the laws of supply and demand. The most viewed pieces become more
expensive; the least viewed become
cheaper to view as the exhibition continues.
