Accrochage [Vaud 2011]
+ Pauline Boudry et Renate Lorenz – Contagious!
For the ninth consecutive year, the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne will present Accrochage, the exhibition dedicated to the contemporary art scene in Vaud, open to all generations. This year the jury responsible for the selection is composed of Jean Curchod, a teacher of the History of Art, Stephanie Moisdon, art critic, curator and cofounder of BDV (Bureau des Videos), Caroline Nicod, independent exhibition curator, Anne Peverelli, artist, and Konrad Tober, art critic. The jury chose 40 works from 24 artists. The Jury Prize 2011 will be awarded during the Opening.
One room will be entirely dedicated to the work of Pauline Boudry, winner of the 2010 jury prize. The artist, who collaborates with Renate Lorenz, will present the installation Contagious!, which is a reconstitution of the epileptic dances of colonial Paris in the late nineteenth century.
The works of Pauline Boudry and Renate Lorenz investigate the history of sex and gender discourses and practices through the staging of historical scenes and playing with sexual identities. The two artists explore archive images and make visible an engaging form of "queer archaeology" in which questions of gender and ethnicity meet and where unconventional and transgressive conditions and apparitions of identity are questioned. Boudry's and Lorenz's films recreate the epileptic dances, self-portraits and accounts of the extraordinary chambermaid Hannah Cullwick, the theories of the scientist Magnus Hirschfeld, and the figure of Salome, all in order to better examine the norms of today, which combine deviance and normality. These works, which are generally filmed in 16 mm, feature artists who work in the fields of performance art and dance, like Werner Hirsch and Yvonne Rainer. The camera, accessories, costumes, music and all other elements have their own raison d'être and thus induce an uncommon and suggestive aesthetic.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a detailed and richly illustrated retrospective catalogue which will be presented Friday, February 18. 2011, 6.30pm.
Laurent Kropf, Prix culturel Manor Vaud 2011 – PORNTIPSGUZZARDO
The winner of the Manor Vaud Award 2011, the artist from Lausanne, Laurent Kropf, will create a completely new work for the largest room in the museum. His installations, in the spirit of a narrative, create a syntax that features references to literature and cinema and takes social codes as a form of inspiration. It makes use of an artistic language in which tiny lives and monumental situations are mixed together and compared.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication.
