Byker Voices looks back at life in a distinctive part of the east of Newcastle.
An industrial village in urban Tyneside that was a workshop of the industrial
revolution, sited on the route of the Roman Wall and the main railway from
London to Edinbrough.
Its decline in the sixties led to a brave new experiment in social housing, the
famous Byker Wall. Ken grew up in Byker during the fifties and sixties and
this is an oral and picture history from the memories of family and friends,
with addition of archive images and some of Sirkka Liisa Konttinen's famous
photographs contrasted with some current views.
'Byker Voices' is published in the Tempus Oral History Series
