Brian Gross Fine Art is pleased to announce Moving Violations, an exhibition of recent works by California artist Judith Foosaner. On view will be energetic charcoal and acrylic drawings collaged on canvas. These works juxtapose gestural mark-making with geometric compositions, creating vibrant, rhythmic abstractions in black and white.
These works begin as expressive, abstract line drawings that are cut into rectangles and collaged onto the canvas in gridded arrangements. The artist incorporates areas of black acrylic paint to create a broken ground, which produces dynamic tension between positive and negative space. The resulting compositions are active fields of interrupted gestures, full of rhythm and movement. The artist has said of this work, "Dance is very much at the basis of this work. When the pieces arrive, I see them as completed choreographies."
Born in Sacramento, CA, Foosaner received her MA at the University of California, Berkeley. Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and is represented in many public and private collections, including the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, the Oakland Museum of California, The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, Arkasas Arts Center, Little Rock, the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, CA, the San Diego Museum of Art, and the Albuquerque Museum of Art. She currently lives and works in Sacramento.
