2011 is a the Year of Italy in Russia, and exhibition 'Italian Painting of XVI-XVIII centuries from Moscow Private Collections', is a response to this event. Upgrade of exhibition and educational programs, round-table discussions and master-classes, and organized in collaboration with Russian and foreign museums, galleries and leading experts, these activities cover the most important issues of antique business and forecast investments.
On April, 16th starts Russian Antique Salon, the most significant and authoritative event on Russian antique market.
Anniversary XXX Russian Antique Salon takes place at the moment of integration of national art market into the international market scene - the key moment for the Russian antique art market development. A huge role in this process belongs to Russian Antique Salon, whose organizers for fifteen years labor to ensure the compliance of offer of antique art works with the highest international standards. Key event in this process is the establishing in 2004 of the International Confederation of Antique and Art Dealers, a professional association which aims at forming the developed antique market in Russia. Time has proven the necessity of such association for both strengthening the position of Antique Salon and development of national art market in general.
Systematic focus on expanding and strengthening the institution of professional expertise became a significant factor, contributing to the introduction of strong principles on antique market and increase of its authority. A number of specialized Expert Councils with leading experts participate already at the preliminary stage of the Salon since November 2003. Their authority and vigorous activity provide Russian Antique Salon with the status of such a Qualification Commission, “a mark of quality” for market participants.
Upgrade of exhibition and educational programs, round-table discussions and master-classes held at the Salon made of Russian Antique Salon one of the most notable events in art, public and social life of Moscow. Organized in collaboration with Russian and foreign museums, galleries and leading experts, these activities cover the most important issues of antique business, forecast investments in the industry, discoveries in studying of antique art and innovations in preservation of works by stimulating the emergence of new generation of Russian gallery owners and collectors.
Russian Antique Salon can be called “a mirror” of Russian old art market and the history of the Salon itself is the evidence of the market formation. Initiated in 1996, Antique Salon marked the establishment of Russian antique market as a socially significant sector. In 1996 there were 18 galleries-participants. This spring Antique Salon counts 250 participants with expositions on 8 600 square meters. The quality level of art works, exhibited at the Central area of Salon, meets European and international standards, set by such exhibitions, as TEFAF (Maastricht), Caroussel de Louvre (Paris), GOTHA (Parma).
Development of Russian antique industry logically resulted in the fundamental expansion of the offer-range. The works of foreign art, both western and eastern, presented throughout the thematic diversity – from archaeological artifacts to paintings of old masters and modernistic trends of 20th century – considerably enlarge their number at the exposition. Thus emerging competition forces more thoughtful approach to offering works of national school, which still prevails in Moscow. Exhibitions of recent Salons witness an improvement of selection of traditionally collected works of 19th century Russian artists, attention to Russian art emigration, significant works of Soviet art of 1930-1960s and increase in representation of applied art. All that confidently predicts that national school will be particularly interesting at XXX Russian Antique Salon.
Celebrating its 15-year anniversary, Russian Antique Salon has become an effective tool for Russian antique art market development and the most important factor that determined the contemporary image of Russian antique business. Nowadays antique art market is an acknowledged place for detection and preservation of cultural monuments and making of public attention to them. Due to this activity antique business took a significant place not only in Russian economics, but also in the formation of national cultural fund.
SPECIAL PROJECT AT XXX RUSSIAN ANTIQUE SALON
2 floor, Halls 14b, 15
Russian Antique Salon, celebrating its 30th jubilee, presents in the non-commercial program the exhibition “Italian Painting of XVI-XVIII centuries from Moscow Private Collections”. (Curator – Victoria Markova, Doctor of Art History (Ph.D.), Professor, Leading researcher at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Honored art worker of Russia).
The most brilliant pages of the Russian collecting history are tied with Italian painting. It’s not just about the richest imperial collections, but also the private collections of Prince Yusupov and Golitsyn, count Stroganov and Shouvalov and many other figures of national culture. “Italian Painting of XVI-XVIII centuries from Moscow Private Collections” is a unique exhibition, where visitors could see for the first time the works, that still remain unknown. A distinctive feature of this exhibition is the museum level of exhibited paintings. It’s remarkable that most paintings have Russian provenance: they date back to old collections, and some of the paintings still belong to the descendants of well-known collectors of the past.
Two exclusive works of early Italian painting from 14th century – “Christ Pantocrator” by Segni di Bonaventura, the famous painter of Siena, and “Madonna with a Child” by Florentine master of around 1400 - open the exposition. Among the paintings of the 16th century stands out “Sleeping Venus and Cupid”, a canvas by the prominent Venetian Renaissance master Bernardino Licinio, in which the author interprets mythological theme, embodied in the famous Dresden canvas by Giorgione, in his own way.
Another noteworthy work – “The Battle on the Milvian Bridge”, repeating in the format of easel painting works the famous Vatican painting in Constantine hall, performed by Giulio Romano on Raphael cardboard. Other works in this hall are also noted for their high artistic level, including “Madonna with a Child” by Giampietrino, one of Milano apprentices of Leonardo da Vinci, “Adoration of the Shepherds” by Ferrarca Battista Dossi, “Holy Family with St. Elizabeth” by Santi di Tito, the prominent Florence mannerist of the second half of 16th century.
Painting “John the Baptist” by Giovanni Baglone, the representative of the late Roman mannerism, opens the section of painting of 17th-18th centuries. It is one of the few signed and dated works of this artist and historiographer, contemporary of Caravaggio, whose works, unfortunately, are not included in the collections of Russian museums. The painting “Madonna with a Child” by Bolognese academics Guercino, the outstanding artist of his time, is a true masterpiece. Still-life compositions by Mario Nucci, by Fleming artist Abraham Brueghel who worked in Naples and Rome, by Neapolitan artists Elena Recco as well as Venetian view by Pietro Bellotti and battle scenes by Graziani - give an idea about the richness and genre variety of Italian baroque painting.
2011 is a the Year of Italy in Russia, and exhibition “Italian Painting of XVI-XVIII centuries from Moscow Private Collections”, held by Antique Salon, is a response to this important event in cultural life of two countries.
