25 Years of Collecting Modern and Contemporary Art

Denver, CO - Amazement, surprise, bemusement, inspiration. The Denver Art Museum is gearing up for a full spectrum of reactions to their latest exhibition - RETROSPECTACLE: 25 Years of Collecting Modern and Contemporary Art. The show, which opens November 16, showcases some of the most exciting work collected by the Denver Art Museum's Modern & Contemporary Art Department in its 25-year history. Whether an object is made of steel, paint, glass, lipstick, bronze or ostrich feathers, the larger-than-life presence of the objects and the depth of subject matter will mesmerize visitors. Boasting such artists as Andy Warhol, Robert Motherwell, Roy Lichtenstein, Joan Mitchell, Henri Matisse, Damien Hirst and Marcel Duchamp, this show also offers a first glimpse at more than 20 works that have never been on display at the Denver Art Museum as well as dozens that have not been seen in the last 5-10 years.

Since her move to Denver in 1978, the department's founding curator Dianne Vanderlip has made it her mission to put Denver on the modern and contemporary art map - a goal she has more than accomplished. Today, the collection boasts 5,000 modern, post-modern and newer artworks and has gained international recognition for its boldness and breadth. "Dianne has assembled a collection that incorporates a diversity of ideas as well as a unique slice of international contemporary art. We're proud to own this collection," said Lewis Sharp, director of the Museum.

The exhibition showcases approximately 80 paintings, sculptures and works in other media by regional, national and international artists. Additionally, approximately 110 photographs from the collection will be on display in the Museum's seventh floor photo gallery.

Retrospectacle is a very particular snapshot of the art we've collected in the past 25 years. It features a selection of my favorite artworks from the collection, and also debuts some recent acquisitions, including several from the 2001 Vicki and Kent Logan gift," Vanderlip said.

The exhibition is organized roughly in chronological order and grouped by type of art or theme such as important artistic movements or distinct geographic styles including contemporary British art and art from the former Eastern Bloc. Themes include racial and gender identity, and biographical and autobiographical content.
