CONVERGE Chicago: Contemporary Curators Forum and Art Chicago Speaks
Programmed to foster dialogue, CONVERGE debuted with great success in 2009. Panels
comprised of regional, national and international curators address current topics in curatorial
and museum issues such as programming in the new economy and recent trends in critical
art practices; CONVERGE seminars are open to the public.
The 2010 Advisory Committee included: Anthony Huberman, Curatorial Advisor,
Contemporary Art Museum Saint Louis; Franklin Sirmans, Chief Curator of Contemporary
Art, LACMA; Hamza Walker, Associate Curator, Renaissance Society; James Rondeau,
Curator and Frances and Thomas Dittmer Chair, Department of Contemporary Art, Art
Institute of Chicago; Julie Rodrigues-Widholm, Pamela Alper Associate Curator, Museum
of Contemporary Art, Chicago.
An international roster of artists, writers and critics are brought together during the fair for
Art Chicago Speaks to discuss current trends and provocative issues confronting today’s
contemporary art market.
Over 30 programs with 70 + speakers were featured as part of CONVERGE and Art
Chicago Speaks at Art Chicago 2010.
New Insight
An exhibition of top MFA students from some of the country's most influential graduate art
programs, New Insight is curated by Susanne Ghez, director of the Renaissance Society at
the University of Chicago. A platform for new talent and innovative ideas, New Insight
provides the opportunity to view work by some of the brightest young minds working in
diverse graduate programs across the country.
Partisan
Partisan is a special exhibition of works culled from Art Chicago galleries that are dedicated
to the artistic exploration of social and political ideas. With hopes of initiating dialogue
about art, activism and social change, Partisan provides a critical and challenging space of
thought provoking and project-oriented works within an art fair context.
Both New Insight and Partisan have been featured at Art Chicago for three consecutive
years.
In addition to Partisan and New Insight, numerous special exhibitions were presented on site
during Art Chicago 2010, adding depth and dimension to the show and helping to promote
work on display by exhibiting galleries.
Survey America
Art Chicago is proud to showcase extraordinary works by artists living and working in the
United States in Survey America. Throughout the fair, works that are emblematic of major movements and
developments in American art are highlighted with a special plaque.
Public Sculpture
Art Chicago is pleased to present large sculptures and installations throughout The
Merchandise Mart’s First Floor and outside the building. The projects include some of the
show’s leading artists—Dzine, Rodney Graham, Jun Kaneko, Dietrich Klinge, Niki de St. Phalle,
Kiki Smith and Tony Tasset.
Docent Program
Art Chicago’s Docent Program, designed for targeted art buying audiences -- from novice
to experienced collector -- is led by art world insiders who create considered tours that
highlight some of the fair’s most notable dealers and works of art.
Creating unique point of contact opportunities for exhibitors and attendees, Art Chicago’s
Docent Program demystifies the art buying process for new collectors, while giving
seasoned buyers an insider’s look at the fair.
Now in its second year, the program has enlisted over 10 arts professionals to act as
docents during the fair, including art publication editors, art historians, art advisors and
museum professionals. At Art Chicago 2010, docents led over 40 private tours of the fair for
a variety of museum, collector, VIP and cultural partners.
