Global fight club

Only a few months before the tenth anniversary of 9/11 and the cruel terror attacks against the World Trade Center and other places in the U.S., an exhibition with works of six artists will focus on various aspects of terrorism. For the first time in history there occurred a simultaneous act of terror with a world-wide reception through TV. The international broadcast of images turned people in the remotest places of the world into witnesses. The violence of the terror act corresponded with their permanent visual attack on TV consumers and internet users. These central images were undeletably burnt into the human minds. The war machine started quickly and it is still working in Afghanistan, and still there is no peace in sight!

People who raised crtical questions and refused to be part of the “We are all Americans now” campaign supporting the U.S. strategy, were denounced as conspiracy theorists and anti-Americans. Beyond the powerful images there are many other reasons – not only for artists – to deal with 9/11 and its consequences.

Sven Kalden, with his powerful model of the Tora Bora cave system, is raising the question about “Where is Osama bin Laden hiding”, which had been so central at the beginning of the conflict, but seems to have lost importance now. The legendary figure appears to be now nothing more than a chimera.

Ann Messner focuses on the treatment of prisoners of war by the U.S. Army, contradicting all international regulations. Costantino Ciervo turned the webpage WikiLeaks into a subject for a series of works. Its founder has recently been considered a terrorist. Another work deals with the conflict of Israel and Palestine, which for many years has had such an impact on international politics and the relation between Arab states and the West. David Krippendorff spotlights stereotype racist vocabulary and phrases in an aggressive video work. Bernhard Draz confronts the visitors with quotes on terror and violence without revealing right away the authors. Ivana Spinelli, in a series of delicate drawings, provocatively transforms the equipment of suicide bombers into fashion accessories.

A bilingual catalog (German/English) of the exhibition will be issued by the publishing house Distillery.
