Mariele Neudecker

Howard Gardens Gallery, Cardiff

The essence of Neudecker's work is her exploration of the territory between reality and imagination, experience and memory, representation and perception. Central to her practice is her interest in and investigation of the social, historical, physical and psychological spaces we inhabit as viewers.

A Chapter Touring exhibition

At Chapter and Howard Gardens Gallery, UWIC

The essence of Neudecker's work is her exploration of the territory between reality and imagination, experience and memory, representation and perception. Central to her practice is her interest in and investigation of the social, historical, physical and psychological spaces we inhabit as viewers.

Featured at Chapter are a number of newly commissioned works including a dramatic video exploration of the urban landscape of Port Talbot, and a number of Neudecker's now trademark glass tanks that display dense mountain ranges around which a perpetual fog cloaks what is hidden below.

Howard Gardens Gallery plays host to Another Day (2000) a mesmerising record of the simultaneous rising and setting of the sun on opposite ends of the globe, and a two-monitor piece that shows a pair of eyes very close up. When you stare into the eyes for a while, you notice that in the middle of each dark pupil is reflected the image of a bright, distant waterfall.

A new catalogue featuring an essay by curator and writer Angela Kingston will be available from Chapter priced £6.95 (for mail order please add £2.50 p&p).

Mariele Neudecker was born in Germany and now lives and works in Bristol, UK; she was Artist-in-Residence at UWIC between 2001 and 02. She has had solo exhibitions at IKON Gallery, Birmingham, Spike Island, Bristol - where she was Henry Moore Sculpture Fellow - and Kunsterhaus Bethanien /Gallerie Barbara Thumm, Berlin.

A free bus will be available on the night of the previews for journeys between the venues.

Howard Gardens Gallery is open Monday - Thursday 9am - 8pm, Friday + Saturday 9am - 6pm. Admission is free.
