'Young' means under 35, 'Belgian' means nationality or resident in Belgium, while painting is no longer the only discipline covered. The jury selected ten artists: David Catherall, Michiel Ceulers, Pieterjan Ginckels, Manor Grunewald, Hou Chien Cheng, Paul Hendrikse, Kelly Schacht, Joris Van De Moortel, Cedric Van Turtelboom and Freek Wambacq. Now they exhibit their work in the Centre for Fine Arts.
The Young Belgian Painters Award is one of the most important visual arts events in Belgium. The contest has been putting the spotlight on young Belgian artists since 1950. ‘Young’ means under 35, ‘Belgian’ means of Belgian nationality or resident in Belgium, while painting is no longer the only discipline covered. This competition could be said to be the equivalent of the Turner Prize in Britain, the Prix Marcel Duchamp in France, and the Vincent Award in the Netherlands. Laureates such as Pierre Alechinsky, Ann Veronica Janssens, Raoul De Keyser, Hans Op de Beeck, and Marie-Jo Lafontaine have brought an international dimension to the competition. This year the jury will consist of Hilde Teerlinck (Frac Nord Pas de Calais), Thierry Raspail (Musée d’art contemporain, Lyon), Clément Minighetti (Mudam, Luxembourg), Henriette Bretton-Meyer (Overgaden Institute of Contemporary Art, Copenhagen), and Miguel von Hafe Pérez (Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea, Santiago de Compostela). Anyone who can win over this demanding jury has already achieved a personal victory. For the event, selected candidates will enter a new piece which will compete for one of four awards: the ‘Crowet’ Young Belgian Painters Award (€ 25.000), the ‘Emile and Stephy Langui’ Young Belgian Painters Award (€ 12.500), the Centre for Fine Arts Award (€
12.500), and the ING Award (€ 12.500).
In December 2010 the jury selected ten artists out of a possible 276 candidates for the 2011 competition: David Catherall, Michiel Ceulers, Pieterjan Ginckels, Manor Grunewald, Hou Chien Cheng, Paul Hendrikse, Kelly Schacht, Joris Van De Moortel, Cédric Van Turtelboom and Freek Wambacq. From 9 June to 11 September 2011 these ten artists will be exhibiting their work in the Centre for Fine Arts.
The awards ceremony will take place on 8 June 2011.
And the winners are:
Crowet Award: Kelly Schacht
Unanimously, the jury chose to award Kelly Schacht the Young Belgian Painters Award – Crowet (25.000 ¤), for her intense research on the relationship between the work of art, the space and the spectator, and how this relationship transforms itself in a performatic gaze.
ING Award: Freek Wambacq
The jury awarded Freek Wambacq the Young Belgian Painters Award – ING (12.500 ¤) for his creative process questioning the tradition of painting in an installation that involves history, memory, narratives, production of images, and for the specific pictorial aspect of his work.
Langui Award: Paul Hendrikse and David Catherall
After a long debate, the jury decided to share the Langui Award between Paul Hendrikse and David Catherall. They were equally seduced by the quality of display and contents of the different approaches of both artists. Hendrikse, for his more documentary/historic approach; Catherall for his conceptual way of dealing with reality.
Centre for Fine Arts Award: Pieterjan Ginckels
The jury awarded Pieterjan Ginckels the Centre for Fine Arts Award (12.500 ¤), for his ambitious installation, the result of a process involving different media such as sound, video and performance creating a physical experience
