Gaya Art Space is proudly present TOMORROW MAYBE, an exhibition which is a meet of five Indonesian artists; Antonius Kho, Made Kaek, Anak Agung Oka Agung, and Made Somadita with five Reunion artists; Cristof Denmont, Stephane Kenkle, Charly Lesquelin, Richard Blancquart and Jean-Marc Lacaze.
TOMORROW MAYBE is the name of the art exchange project between Reunion (France) and Bali (Indonesia). The Reunion-Bali art exchange exhibitions bear witness to the common experiences of Reunion Island and Bali Island as two melting pots of a variety of cultures. The artists involved in the Reunion-Bali art exchange exhibitions bear witness to the intermingling of cultures in their respective islands. Their works show evidence of the constantly sought-after identity.
The works exhibited in the Reunion-Bali art exchange project raise awareness towards the significance and the importance of identity in the postmodern age. Postmodernism places on the center stage issues of identity that modernism suppressed. Andreas Huyssen maps four identities that “are and will remain constitutive of postmodern culture for some time to come”: national identities (especially those formed in response to imperialism), sexual identities, an environmentalist identity, and ethnic identities (especially non-western). Postmodern paradigm challenges the formalist belief of a transcendent, universal art, and welcomes the advent of different expressions of identities in contemporary art. This leads to questioning as well as to hybrid forms of expression, as has been suggested by the works in the Reunion-Bali art exchange exhibitions.
What the artists actually demonstrate through the art project is an effort to pose certain attitude towards the meaning of being a Reunionese, a Creoles, a Balinese, or an Indonesian, in the web of encounters, exchanges and interchanges in the contemporary world. Their works and creative activities during this project inspire us to re-trace the spaces of our collective memories as well as our individual experiences in order to give a meaningful answer to the discomforting question about who we are.
