Coagula Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of The Superior
Paintings, a solo show of a new series of abstract paintings by artist
Michael Salerno. The paintings in this exhibit explore visual dissonance
as a neurological, rather than optical, phenomena. Michael Salerno's
precise color schematics of contrary and counter-intuitive color
combinations are dispersed in a painterly style best described as a
weave. The all-over composition of previously disharmonious elements
leaves the realm of the ocular. The initial and natural reaction is to
find a Superior color, and its corresponding schematic from within the
dense cosmos of a Salerno composition. The Superior element of each
painting is that which the eye can assess as dominant. The artist's
melding of dissonance and harmony as time-based phenomena answers the
age old question of whether the mind rules the body or the body rules
the mind, with an impassioned affirmative for the latter.

SKIN:- A FEMALE PERSPECTIVE
I-5 GALLERY
Five women explore textures in their artwork to convey bodily experiences.
The visceral nature of these works arrives at a similar mindset by a variety
of means, unique in each artist's approach.
TERRY LENIHAN's elongated figures constructed with found objects -Â dress
patterns and concrete -Â are juxtaposed and integrated into gender-based
issues and interpretations. The ethereal nature of these figures created
from tissue paper contrasts with the weight of the blocks of concrete that
hold them down. Patterns of thought and action are pieced together in frozen
gestures referencing the human body and stretching our perceptions in
relating to the female form.
LAUREL PALEY's work relates to the confluent visual and tactile issues of
flesh, decay and transformation. Combining different working methods, Paley
embeds and tattoos throwaway images onto the literal printed 'skin' of the
image surface.
ELENA PHILLIPS is another artist in the show who works with layering and
with what lies beneath the surface. In an organic process which involves
figures sculptured of wire, cheesecloth, plaster and acrylic, she explores
the subtler aspects of physicality. While possessing serenity and elegance,
these figures describe a kind of raw and- empty state reminiscent of
Egyptian mummies, embalmed for posterity yet ultimately destined for decay.
MOLLIE MURPHY's installation 'Traces' consists of hangings constructed of
bamboo, muslin, flax and life drawings on vellum paper set into motion by
gently blowing air.- The sparse, minimal assuredness of the calligraphic
line conveys a combination of fragility and strength. The individual
drawings interplay with one another almost seem to soar as they envelope the
viewer in a subtle intimate embrace.
KIRSTEN XAVIER's quirky abstract 'breast' art is constructed from layers of
wood, plaster, yarn and oil paints. These pieces could be described as
edible human flowers, erotic cakes, flying tantrum spaceships, kitty
desserts or sensuous cosmic mandalas. Xavier's art explores issues ranging
from the infant oral stages to life forms in outer space, her interests
include the primal effects of breast feeding, the taste of colors and the
cosmic pattern of infinity.
