Fragment. The exhibition concentrates on his expansive, installed video projections (1998-2010) which give the transience of the film medium a concrete place and also a bodily-spatial presence. In his work he places a strong emphasis on his own personal Catholic upbringing, the collective experience of the broken history of Poland, and the crimes of humanity committed in the 20th century.
Mirosław Bałka’s installations and sculptures were shown internationally immediately after the social upheavals of 1989, including at the Venice Biennale, Documenta, and most recently at the Tate Modern in London and the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid. In his work Bałka places a strong emphasis on his own personal Catholic upbringing, the collective experience of the broken history of Poland, and the crimes of humanity committed in the 20th century.
The exhibition in the Akademie der Künste concentrates on his expansive, installed video projections (1998-2010) which give the transience of the film medium a concrete place and also a bodily-spatial presence. The video piece BlueGasEyes (2004) shows a composition of stove burners on two fields of salt. The gently moving rings of light have an almost hypnotic effect. But the beauty of these images intermingles with the hissing of the gas, which has lost its natural innocence in the history of the 20th century. Even more direct, Carrousel (2004), made up of four circulating projections with sculptural elements, addresses one place of horrible slaughter: Majdanek, near Lublin. The film material doesn’t meet the expectations of a documentary film, but conceals a mysterious and, in the end, poetic dimension within.
The exhibition is taking place within the framework of the project “CHANGE OF PERSPECTIVE. Artistic dialogues with Poland” made possible by cooperation between the Polish Institute of Berlin and the Akademie der Künste, Berlin. All artistic departments of the Akademie der Künste are taking part in the interdisciplinary priority program in combination with numerous other renowned Polish institutions. The project CHANGE OF PERSPECTIVE brings historical modernism and contemporary art production together and intends to be an exemplary incitement for future artistic dialog with Poland.
