The Most Recent Paintings
GAle GAtes et al. is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Peter
Sabbeth entitled Peter Sabbeth: The Most Recent Paintings. This body of work
illustrates Sabbeth's evolution from his playful abstractions to a more
processed and subtle use of
form and color.
Using a variety of layering techniques and loosely painted
repeating shapes and grid-like lines, this group of paintings illustrates
the symbiotic relationship between a form and the space in which it exists,
calling into question the delicate line between pattern and happenstance.
Inspired by natural random patterns such as scratches in pavement and fallen
leaves upon a field, Sabbeth recreates the repetitions that surround us in
our everyday lives. Their serenity emerges from beneath their busy exterior
offering a haven from their own
confusion. The mesmerizing abstractions can be seen as a reflection of man's
place within the environment, a mirror for contemplation.
Born in New York, Peter Sabbeth has been a Brooklyn based artist since 1992.
In 2001 he set up a studio in Springs, north of Amagansett, NY and continues
to work in both places. His work has most recently been shown at Glenn
Horowitz and Guild Hall Museum in East Hampton, Sara Nightingale Gallery,
Water Mill, NY and The Art Movement in London, England.
GAle GAtes first exhibited Peter Sabbeth's work as part of a group show,
