'View from Above'. The title of this exhibition refers to the many shots from above, down into everything - from night time views of Los Angeles to small plants growing in the artist's windowbox. Because of these compositional and abstract qualities, his works seem penetrated by the same artistic vision.
View from Above
Wolfgang Tillmans is the most talked-about photographer of the nineties and a remarkable renewer of photography in relation to other contemporay visual arts. The German-born Tillmans is based in London and in 2000 - as the first foreign-born artist - won the most prestigious British art award: The Turner Prize.
While his work of the 90s constituted a sort of chronicle of the decade's youth culture, his more recent, often abstract works, are of an almost classical beauty. The title of this exhibition refers to the many shots from above, down into everything - from night time views of Los Angeles to small plants growing in the artist's windowbox. Because of these compositional and abstract qualities, his works seem penetrated by the same artistic vision.
The way in which he displays his works distinguishes Tillmans as purely visual artist. Ranging in size from an A-4 piece of paper to formats spanning from the floor to the height of the ceiling, they are installed collectively rather than hung on the walls as single works.
