works on paper
Percy Miller gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of works on paper
by Jonathan Parsons.
Parsons is well known for his diverse working practices which have included
map dissections, grid paintings, flag installations, needle point and works on
leather. This will be Parsons' first solo exhibition exclusively presenting
his works on paper.
The exhibition will include Configurations, a major new body of work
consisting of twenty paintings derived from a vast archive of source material,
which ranges from found drawings and doodles to photographs of shapes in food
and marks in dirt on the back of trucks. From these, Parsons has selected
those images that he has described as having ‘pictorial layouts that are the
opposite of compositions, which convey the idea of an uncomposed or an extant
image, a given arrangement or formation.’
All realized in the same way, the Configurations are meticulous transcriptions
onto coloured paper of the various sources. The background is painted in white
acrylic, reversing the convention of figure and ground, leaving the subsequent
negative shape as plain paper.
The exhibition will also include a variety of works on paper which cover
Parsons’ range of working practices. These will include a new editioned print
and new watercolours and drawings, as well as a selection of working drawings
and works made over the last ten years.
