This exhibition at the German Embassy presents new works by London-based artists Claudia Djabbari, Christian Flamm, and Melanie Manchot that use different terms to investigate the possibility of positioning identities.

Coinciding with London's Frieze Art Fair 2011, this exhibition invites the viewer to question the artworks in terms of their character of representation and to negotiate, through communication with the works, forms of the representation of identity in contemporary art and culture.

Exploring the ongoing debate around art and its relationship to national demarcations, the artists question whether images can obtain the ability to represent a national idea or, in turn, if that can be attributed to images. The artists address both personal and foreign experiences that cannot be located within the boundaries of one or the other nation, but rather open up to the real or imaginary worlds between national or cultural demarcations. Each work provides a space of negotiation in which various historical, social, political, and cultural identities meet, entering into a critical dialogue that is often riddled with conflict.

Especially during Frieze, when the international circuit of contemporary art meets in London, the exhibition enquires into the function of art as a global signifier in relation to its history of origins and the terms of cultural exchange that condition its production.

The German Embassy offers a unique space for such an exhibition, not least because of its function to represent a government, which makes it appear as an isolated, segregated area within the global city of London.
