Cathy Lomax

Transition Gallery, London

In Alleyoops Lomax transforms the gallery into a playspace, creating an upside down world where nothing is as it really seems and anything is possible. Teetering on the edge of social chaos this is a place where fame and fulfilment are no longer transient and where you can be whoever you want to.

Transition presents Alleyoops the first solo gallery show by the artist Cathy Lomax.

In Alleyoops Lomax transforms the gallery into a playspace, creating an upside down world where nothing is as it really seems and anything is possible. Teetering on the edge of social chaos this is a place where fame and fulfilment are no longer transient and where you can be whoever you want to.

Lomax, who has recently completed an MA in Fine Art at Central St Martins, previously worked as a make-up artist, creating fantasy fashion characters for Vogue, The Face and ID. This wishworld of unreality teaming with models and celebrities fuels her work as an artist.

Alleyoops contains a series of carnivalesque works connected by magic, transformation and escapism. These include the Self Portrait With Screams, a little girl turning into a doll and numerous paintings of masked figures that subvert the fashion beauty shot by covering facial features and preserving privacy.

Despite influences ranging from Tenessee Williams The Fugitive Kind to Elvis Presley¹s Comeback Special, there is a peculiarly English feel to the work. A wistful, melancholic longing for a world that has never really existed. The lonely figures in Lomax¹s paintings inhabit this mythical space creating an otherworldly atmosphere that is further enhanced by the tinkling of the crystal hung ceiling.

In the picture an image from degree show, summer 2000.
