Olafur Eliasson has conceived a new light installation for the Kunstbau. It is based on his investigations into natural light phenomena and allows the space to be perceived in a new way.
Olafur Eliasson (born 1967), who spent the first years of his life in Iceland,
has long been concerned with cognitive and physical phenomena found in nature
and in the natural sciences. Either using highly complex, technical equipment
or stunningly simple props like water or light, he creates artificial
landscapes and moments of perception that allow the viewer to see or
experience natural phenomena, familiar or otherwise. The powerfully
atmospheric, although entirely constructed quality of these landscapes makes
us aware of the distance that today separates civilisation from immediate
experience, and questions notions of authenticity in realms of perception.
Olafur Eliasson has conceived a new light installation for the Kunstbau. It is
based on his investigations into natural light phenomena and allows the space
to be perceived in a new way. A coloured light wall will be installed in the
Kunstbau, located behind a membrane and connected to a computer-controlled
dimmer. With the help of a programme developed specifically for this work, a
constantly changing dramaturgy of light movements and intense colour shadings
will be generated on the membrane.
