The exhibition features important works made throughout Palermo's short 15-year career.
This is the first major solo exhibition of Blinky Palermo's work in a public gallery in the United Kingdom, and features important works made throughout his short 15-year career. Born in Leipzig in 1943 as Peter Schwarze, the artist took the name of his adopted family, Heisterkamp, before assuming the name of boxing promoter and mafioso Blinky Palermo in 1964.
Palermo rose quickly to international acclaim for his experimentation with the traditional forms of painting, extending its format from two-dimensional canvases to three-dimensional architectural environments, and shifting from the medium of paint itself to found materials, including manufactured fabrics. This retrospective includes a number of 'objects', irregularly-shaped painted canvases and supports; 'fabric paintings', which consist of coloured fabrics sewn together in horizontal bands; and paintings on steel and aluminium. Drawings related
to many of Palermo's wall drawings, which were produced for temporary exhibitions and private homes, are also included.
In 1964, Palermo began studying under Joseph Beuys at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie, Germany, where fellow students included Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke. He died prematurely in 1977, but not before creating a body of work that is considered to be at the forefront of post World War II European art.
Blinky Palermo has been curated by Gloria Moure. The exhibition has been conceived by the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona and is co-produced with the Serpentine Gallery.
