Among the first Western travelers to visit the Caucasus at the beginning of the 1930's, Maillart's photographs draw us into the fascinating world of her experiences. Rich with inspiration Maillart returned with hundreds of images which became a classic book in the history of travel literature entitled 'Celestial Mountains to the Red Sands'.
The Museé de l’Elysée and the Museum of Fine Arts in Bishkek present a legendary exhibition of the photographs of Ella Maillart. Among the first Western travelers to visit the Caucasus at the beginning of the 1930’s, Ella Maillart’s photographs draw us into the fascinating world of her experiences. During her voyage in 1932 she crossed Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, ultimately finding herself at the Chinese frontier where she climbed to the summit of the Celestial Mountains, also known as Tien-shan.
Rich with inspiration Maillart returned with hundreds of images which became a classic book in the history of travel literature entitled, «Celestial Mountains to the Red Sands ». This exhibition will present approximately one hundred select images, which have been unified especially for this exhibit with an accompanying catalog. This project was initiated by the Swiss Association for Aid in Development Palmir’s Bridges and conceived by the curator of the Musée de l’Elysée, Daniel Girardin, with the Bishkek Museum of Fine Arts.
