Wilhelm Hack Museum, Ludwigshafen

Sounds and Silence. The new collection display, divided into several thematic sections, alludes to the appearance of musical and sonic phenomena in the work of over 100 artists. In paintings music is being investigated through the choice of figurative motive.

When looking at the color light blue, Russian painter Wassily Kandinski was able to hear the sounds of a flute. Dark blue evoked the sounds of the cello and bright yellow the high notes of a trumpet. As a synaesthete, Kandinsky was literally able to hear colors and to see sounds. Yet even without this ability it is possible to connect painterly forms and colours with musical sounds and melodies. The tremulous and jagged lines - the protagonists in Kandinsky’s famous picture “Painting with White Lines” from 1913 - are reminiscent of musical vibrations.
If as sounds or rhythms, harmonies or dissonances, musical elements often play a central role in the works of many artists. The Wilhelm-Hack-Museum therefore dedicates its new collection display “hackordnung#3” under the title “Sounds and Silence” (01.10.2011 – 09.09.2011) to the relationship between the world of music and the world of art.
The new collection display hackordnung#3, divided into several thematic sections, alludes to the appearance of musical and sonic phenomena in the work of over one hundred artists. In paintings such as “Tabarin” by Max Beckmann or “Seated Woman with Mandolin” by Auguste Herbin, music is being investigated through the choice of figurative motive. In the development of abstract art, music is given an exemplary role, as its elements of composition are free from the necessity to represent and emulate reality. Instead, music conveys moods and feelings through formal structures, such as harmonic chords or lively rhythms. August Macke’s “Colorful Composition (Homage to Johann Sebastian Bach)” and Piet Mondrian’s composition “Red, Yellow, and Blue” reveal and illustrate the structural parallels between music and art. In musical compositions notes and pauses are of equal importance. The moment of silence, illustrated in art through spatial emptiness can be seen and experienced in works such as “The Silent Room” by Piero Dorazio or “Wind” by Günther Uecker. Throughout the course of the 20th Century artists and musicians discovered objects of everyday life and used these as artistic material. These objects were then integrated into sound -, picture -, and object -collages. Especially in (the world of) Happenings can we see the development of a particularly close connection between art and music. An example of this new marriage between the two genres can be seen in the work “Fluxusorchestra” by Albert M. Fine, and the happening - score “Graphis” by Dick Higgins.

Aspects of Sound s and Silence, the new theme of the collection display can also be seen in the Graphic Art Collection of the museum. At the beginning we see exponents of Pop Art, which employed as its imagery pictures of popular culture ranging from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to the Beatles.

In 1988 the Wilhelm-Hack –Museum received a large donation by art collector Heinz Beck, consisting in part of a collection of records, ranging from masterpieces of contemporary music to icons of artist- designed record covers.
Accompanied is the new collection display hackordnung#3 by a diverse musical program.
