The exhibition comprises around 50 large formatted paintings and more than 80 portraits
His works focus mainly on human figures. He depicts the burden of physicality in dark and often gloomy colours, using massive amounts of paint on the canvas. The artist's topic is suffering inside and outside the body, in its material-physical reality as well as sexual and social determination. He draws on everyday lives and mythology and although he works almost entirely figurative and topic-related, his works are not framed by narratives or anecdotes. His large images express Kluge's reality and are as impressive as works by Francis Bacon or Lucian Freud. The exhibition comprises around 50 large formatted paintings and more than 80 portraits. Including works from 1982 until today, this makes it the most comprehensive exhibition by Gustav Kluge so far. (Image: Egocinema, 2011, oil on canvas, 270 x 360cm, C Gustav Kluge)
