New Works - Oil Paintings, Gouaches, Collages, Drawings

From 30 April 2003 onwards, GALERIE ERNST HILGER will show new oil paintings, gouaches, collages, as well as graphic work by Karl Korab. Since the mid-seventies, the gallery has been following up on the work of this artist from Lower Austria, who has just turned 65. The exhibition is scheduled until 24 May 2003.

The theme of Karl Korab's pictures is "landscapes". However, this is not the traditional style of landscape painting. The image presented by nature is shown in condensed form, reduced to its essential features. In other words, Karl Korab is showing the emotional response, his pictures have more of an impressionistic character, rather than being an optical reproduction of the landscape motifs, in the form of relics.
"... Karl Korab has a highly focused approach to his landscape paintings, both to the picture as a whole and to its elements. He creates landscapes with the landscape elements found in nature. Like in collages, he includes objects in his painted pictures..."
"...Karl Korab's artistic focus is clearly on painting. ..... The world of colors is his space for artistic adventure. ..... His material-oriented style of painting relates to colors as materials, on the one hand, which are usually applied to the surface in broad impasto strokes, as well as to colored materials, on the other hand, which are applied to the surface, once again arranged according to the structural features of the composition. Together with the applied mass of paint, they form a consistent conglomerate that becomes an "entity" in the eye of the beholder when experiencing the painting. ....." (Peter Assmann: "Von den Rändern zum Zentralen" (From the Borders to the Center) in: "Karl Korab, Bildwerke 1960-1999" (Karl Korab: Images 1960 - 1999), Vienna, 1999)

"... I began to take an interest in the world of things, in the objects of everyday life. To me, they were not motionless props; they had a life of their own, because of the traces that people had left on them. Increasingly, invented objects came to dominate my pictures; things that do not exist but could exist because they carry in them the experience gained in the world of real things. They are not ends in themselves, but elements that are structured to make up a functioning organism. They have been assigned their specific place, cannot be moved and cannot exist outside their terms of reference. They reflect the existence of people and testify to our civilization. ..." (Karl Korab: "Einiges über mich und meine Arbeit" (A Few Things about Myself and my Work), in: "Karl Korab, Bildwerke 1960-1999" (Karl Korab: Images 1960 - 1999), Vienna, 1999)
