May 2nd will mark Lisa Sanditz’s debut solo exhibition at CRG Gallery with a series of twelve paintings.
With her new body of work Sanditz has established a region of cultural inspection by means of a Bruegelian informed observation and a celebration of American sports culture. Though the work does not borrow directly from Bruegel’s stylistically, nor does it depict the familiar roar and flash photography of the sports stadium, but retains something more unique all together. Following Bruegel’s “Seasons†or “Months†series, Sanditz has similarly created twelve paintings, one for each month, depicting the range of seasons and their respective sports, in a style that can speak in both a rugged application of the painted surface and lightness of color and sensibility, together creating an anachronistic realm where a sports arena might appear more suited to a peasant lifestyle and the farmer’s field now tended for the play of soccer or football.
Through this approach we find the familiar reframed, and from a vantage that requires a subtler pace before we are able to find a sense of recognition in her images. It can also be seen in Sanditz’s works on paper, where she incorporates the use of found material such as plastic bags to create color and a sewing machine as drawing element.
The work has a humor and playfulness at times and at others has moments that are grimmer, all unfolding into depictions of animals, cars, and other elements that seem uniquely resonant in forms both current and aged.
