Berlinde De Bruyckere
The Wound

Curator Selen Ansen

From 21 June on, ARTER will be hosting a solo exhibition by Flemish artist Berlinde De Bruyckere. Entitled "The Wound", the exhibition is curated by art historian and theorist Selen Ansen.

Berlinde De Bruyckere frequently uses material such as wax, wood, wool, horse skin and hair to produce sculptures and drawings that refer to the body's fragility, to suffering and desire. "The Wound" presents, alongside De Bruyckere's sculptures and drawings, a number of new pieces that the artist has produced especially for the exhibition in Istanbul.

The new works the artist will show in Istanbul include "-009-, 2011-2012" and a new series entitled "The Wound". As part of the exhibition, two new works by De Bruyckere will be presented at the Çukurcuma Hammam. This space was included as an exhibition venue at the artist's request, who wished to engage her work in a dialogue with the local context and architectural heritage. This additional exhibition site also refers to the idea of cleansing the body, rubbing off the extra layer of skin, which in a sense implies moulting.

The exhibition will feature, as an integral element, daily performances by French dancer and choreographer Vincent Dunoyer. Dunoyer effectively "lends" his body to the artist and the exhibition. He will perform every day except Mondays on ARTER's first floor at 15:00 and 18:30.

Sophia Pompéry
The Silent Shape of Things. Solo exhibition

Curated by Ece Pazarbaşı

ARTER will host the first solo exhibition in Istanbul by artist Sophia Pompéry. Curated by Ece Pazarbaşı, the exhibition entitled “The Silent Shape of Things” will be held on ARTER’s third floor between 21 June and 26 August, alongside Berlinde De Bruyckere’s “The Wound”.
Sophia Pompéry’s works derive from the artist’s interest in everyday objects and physical phenomena. They are motivated by a desire to slow down the sense of time and are characterised by a picturesque quality and a subtly arranged visual element.

Born in Berlin in 1984, Pompéry studied fine arts and sculpture at Weissensee School of Arts and Institute for Spatial Experiment, University of Arts, Berlin. Since
2004, she has had more than 10 solo shows and participated in several group exhibitions at institutions such as the Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art and the
Reykjavik Art Museum. Her video installation “Lighting Up, Burning Down” was previously shown at ARTER as part of the institution’s inaugural exhibition “Starter”.
Sophia Pompéry’s solo exhibition at ARTER will feature more than 10 works, including video installations and objects. The exhibition will run until 26 August 2012.
