400 Years Turkey - the Netherlands

With the extensive exhibition, Cobra - 1000 Days of Free Art, the Dutch Cobra Museum of Modern Art is taking part in the official cultural programme to celebrate 400 years of diplomatic relations between Turkey and the Netherlands. For the first time in history, the masterpieces from the oeuvres of the artists of the Cobra international art movement are being exhibited in Turkey. The title of the exhibition is a wink of the eye to what the European art movement and the land of the Thousand and One Nights certainly have in common: a sense of the miraculous.

From 29 June, this exhibition will be on view at the prestigious Sakip Sabanci Museum of Fine Art in Istanbul. The multi-faceted official opening will be held on June 28. Other museums also taking part in the 400th anniversary celebrations at the Sakip Sabanci and other prestigious cultural institutes in Turkey include the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum, the Van Abbe Museum and the Amsterdam Museum.

Cobra - 1000 Days of Free Art, organized by the Cobra Museum of Modern Art in cooperation with the Sabanci Museum of Fine Art, will present about sixty highlights from the Cobra movement. It is the first time they are being exhibited in Turkey. Most of the works included are from the collection of the Cobra Museum and the corporate collection of the ABN AMRO Bank. They include paintings, sculptures, ceramics, works on paper, textiles, jazz music and a range of documentary items from the period between 1947 and the early 1960s. The exhibition also includes documentary films with subtitles in Turkish and English. These films give insight, amongst other things, into life in the Netherlands following World War II, illuminating the context in which Cobra evolved. An extensive catalogue in Turkish and English accompanies the exhibition.

Like previous exhibitions organized by the Cobra Museum of Modern Art in Bern and Prague, Cobra - 1000 Days of Free Art at Istanbul's Sakip Sabanci Museum helps fulfil the Cobra Museum's ambition to continue to bring this vital, avant-garde European art movement to the attention of the rest of the world. It is an important part of the heritage of the Netherlands in the 20th century.

The exhibition ‘Cobra – 1000 Days of Free Art’ has been made possible by a donation of the Sica programme NLTR400 of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a contribution of the Dutch consulate in Istanbul and by the support of our sponsors: ABN Amro Bank, De Meeuw Bouwsystemen, Gözde private equity investment company, Ipragaz, Merck and TMF Group.
