An exciting retrospective of a decade's serious exploration
Leeds Metropolitan University Gallery & Studio Theatre is pleased to have commissioned James Chinneck's first retrospective exhibition in this country. Chinneck's sculptures, sound and video works, installations and photographs are on loan from major public and private collections the world over.
James Chinneck is a formidable artist of his generation, producing and exhibiting work internationally in a variety of contexts. His work covers a multitude of activities ranging from producing work for exhibition in formal gallery environments, printed matter and working in a broader site-specific manner.
Chinneck's practice is underpinned by a consideration of the notions of travel, tourism and place. He investigates how through advertising and the media images of different tourist environments are generated. Allowing the tourists' imagination to run wild, these images ultimately provide the basis for selecting and evaluating potential places to visit. In turn, tourists seek to experience 'in reality' the pleasurable dramas they have already imagined. However, Chinneck argues that since 'reality' can never provide the perfected pleasures encountered in daydreams, each journey leads to disillusionment and to longing for forever-new places and cultures to visit.
The humorous and unexpected has become a trademark in Chinneck's diverse range of works spanning a decade of serious exploration. Trust me, I'm an artist, adheres to this mode of thinking in a highly refined form.
