PAINTING / WORKS ON PAPER

Linda Durham Contemporary Art in Chelsea is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by ROBERT KELLY. Paintings/ Works On Paper will open Thursday, May 15th, 2003 and remain on exhibit through June 19th, 2003. A reception for the artist will be held from 6pm to 8pm on Thursday, May 15th.

Writing on his paintings from a previous exhibition, Arden Reed said: 'Robert Kelly's is about history, whether of culture or of the canvas itself. He uses paint the way Proust used the Madeleine, endowing matter with the power to release memory. While the paintings look unmistakably contemporary, they seem sealed off from the viewer by their polished finish, which gives them an old master, museumlike quality. (Yet they also glisten, as if the paint were freshly applied).'

KELLY'S recent work explores the most basic properties of line, form and color. The seamless layering of antique paper and paint creates a sensual surface and meditative focus. Slowly, the paintings reveal themselves. In the beginning, the viewer is captivated by the sheer elegance of the work. Soon the intellectual and personal references emerge, revealing his appreciation for history, community and nature.'

MR. KELLY was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1956 and received his B.A. from Harvard in 1978. His work has been widely exhibited in the United States, Europe and Asia and is included in numerous corporate and public collections including the Brooklyn Museum, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Art in Santa Fe, Chemical Bank in London, Dupont and Company in Delaware and IBM in New York. MR. KELLY has been represented by Linda Durham Contemporary Art since 1984.
