Unique hand-painted photographs. Since beginning their collaboration more than 25 years ago, Pierre et Gilles have produced an iconographic and allegorically complex body of work which has done much to redefine the process of portraiture. By making one-of-a-kind photographs, a method that is the antithesis of the coveted "decisive moment," Pierre et Gilles have excelled in creating provocative syntheses of the real, the fantastic and the ideal; of photography, painting and design.
The Robert Miller Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of unique hand-painted photographs by Pierre et Gilles.
Applying their global embrace of historical and contemporary references, subjects and symbols, and their matter-of-fact presentation of a vast range of lifestyles to what they refer to as "the idealization of the fixed moment," Pierre et Gilles continue to expand the limits of photography while illustrating the potential of art as a social force. Through explorations of the cross-cultural and pan-historical aspects of their visual world, the artists' elaborately staged images represent seamless transitions between art and popular culture.
The exhibition will consist of over 45 works covering a range of 25 years of the artists' career.
The work of Pierre et Gilles has been the subject of scores of museum and gallery exhibitions worldwide. A retrospective survey was presented at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in 2000. This will be the artists' first gallery exhibition in New York in more than a dozen years. Pierre et Gilles maintain a studio in Paris.
There will be a reception on Thursday, May 15, from 6-8 pm.
