Coinciding with the Chelsea Flower Show, pump house gallery celebrates summer
with two striking takes on the contemporary garden.
Miki Miyara has been commissioned by THRIVE and pump house gallery to make a new
site-specific work. She uses the traditional techniques of origami - the craft
of folding individual pieces of paper into recognisable shapes - to make her
ambitious installations. The artist is interested in how these abstract paper
forms successfully conjure realities through minimal means and the imagination
of the viewer. For pump house gallery Miki is creating a hanging fantasy-garden
of paper flora and fauna that will utilise the architecture of the building and
its location to reflect upon the art of nature and the nature of art. Miki is
currently studying for an MA in Sculpture at Wimbledon School of Art.
THRIVE is the national charity that uses gardening to improve the lives of
disabled, disadvantaged and older people. It has four therapeutic gardens, one
of which is located just two minute's walk from pump house gallery in Battersea
Park. THRIVE acts as an umbrella organisation in the UK for over 1,600
specialist projects, working in settings as diverse as hospitals, prisons,
schools and residential homes.
To celebrate 25 years of changing lives through horticulture, THRIVE has
commissioned photographer James Finlay to document their work. Through his long
association with the charity, he has created powerful black and white images
that portray the inspirational work achieved by the organisation's volunteers
and beneficiaries - the images telling their own moving stories. Previous
projects as photographer include expeditions to the North Pole on the Arctic
Ocean, glaciers in Patagonia and hot-air ballooning in Alaska.
A book of the THRIVE photographs will be available for sale to coincide with the
exhibition. A charity launch of the exhibition will take place on the evening of
the 15 May 2003. See overleaf for THRIVE contact details.
