comunicato stampa

Galerie Gabriel Rolt is proud to present the first solo-exhibition of photographs by Alberto García-Alix in The Netherlands. Considered to be one of the most important names in contemporary European Photography, García-Alix’s work is charged with great intensity and profound poetry. He creates a personal and complex universe, which has stunned the world of the visual arts.

The exhibition brings together photographs that were made by García-Alix in the last ten years. The artist, internationally recognized for his unique work, shows us a large selection of portraits and landscapes, which enables us to explore a mysterious world of light and shadow.

García-Alix’s images are characterized by their vitality and compositional excellence, regardless of the subject he is portraying. Whether he shows his friends and their environment in Madrid in the eighties, or a specific landscape – they all become part of García-Alix’s universe.

"Everything is a portrait" says García-Alix, and indeed, all of his images seem to be about encounters, about the photographic subject turning into something new and unfamiliar. His images tend to be provocative and erotic, and are always very personal.

Alberto Garcia-Alix (León, Spain, 1956) is known as one of the most important Spanish photographers emerging from Spain's La Movida, the post-Franco era of free expression. His work is represented in important museums and private collections like the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid and The Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, and has been shown in many exhibitions around the world. In 2008 Garcia Alix had an iimportant retrospective in Madrid, titled ‘De donde no se vuelve’ in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia. His work is characterized by a documentary approach, vibrantly capturing the atmosphere of 1980's Madrid and beyond. This year he won the prestigious photography Prize ‘Premio photoespaña 2012’.
