abc Art Berlin Contemporary

Station Berlin, Berlin

This year's edition of abc art berlin contemporary features 129 galleries from 18 countries. The innovative fair format was developed by Berlin galleries as an appealing platform for international galleries to present individual works by contemporary artists from around the world in Berlin.

abc art berlin contemporary will take place from September 13th–16th at Station Berlin, located in the Berlin neighbourhood of Kreuzberg, and is also now a partner in the newly founded Berlin Art Week. While in past years the selection of artworks was based on an overarching theme, this year galleries have been asked to submit their own positions. abc’s innovative fair format was developed by Berlin galleries with international galleries in mind, encouraging them to present individual positions in contemporary art from around the world in Berlin. The selection and compiling of works was the responsibility of abc organizers. Participating galleries will not be presenting their program, but rather acting as producers for their artists.

129 galleries from 18 countries will participate: 66 galleries from Berlin, 8 from Vienna, 6 from London, 4 each from Dubai, New York, Zurich and Paris, 2 each from Beijing, Brussels, Cape Town, Frankfurt, Malmö, Milan, Munich and Rome; and 1 each from Antwerp, Bremen, Catania, Copenhagen, Dresden, Dusseldorf, Glasgow, Hamburg, Helsinki, Hong Kong, Innsbruck, Istanbul, Jeddah, Karlsruhe, Cologne, Naples, Prague and Seoul.

New York’s Artists Space has been invited to organize two artist “interventions”, talks and the “bazaar” as part of abc . Founded in 1972 in Downtown Manhattan, Artists Space has since successfully contributed to changing the institutional and economic landscape for contemporary art, by lending support to emerging artists and emerging ideas alike, and often controversially and critically challenging the intellectual and artistic status quo in New York City and beyond. Find more information at our Program.

The exhibition design for this year‘s abc was developed by Manuel Reader and is looking critically into temporary fair architecture. Instead of producing extensive one-way solutions, the concept is based upon already existing and recyclable structures. Combined with specially developed display systems, those structures will provide an environmental sustainable setting.

abc is a private initiative by nine galleries in Berlin: Galerie Guido W. Baudach, Mehdi Chouakri, Galerie Kamm, Klosterfelde, Meyer Riegger, Galerie Neu, Neugerriemschneider, Esther Schipper and Zak Branicka. For its debut in 2008, the galleries invited visitors to the Station Berlin, where some 75 positions from sculpture, installation, and projected images were shown. The following year focussed on the presentation of models for art in public space at the Akademie der Künste at the Tiergarten under the title “def – drafts establishing future”. In 2010 abc chose the Marshall Haus at Berlin’s convention center as a venue. Under the title “light camera action”, the exhibition examined the complex issues of all things cinematic within contemporary art and the related aspect of performance. Last year – under the motto “about painting” – abc returned to the Station Berlin, presenting around 120 contemporary positions on painting, as well as installations, works on paper, videos, photographs and sculptures with a contextual interest in this classic medium.

A catalog will be published on occasion of the abc by Mousse Publishing, Milano.

Furthermore abc is excited to host the fourth edition of MISS READ, Berlin’s annual Independent Publishing Festival at the premises. This year MISS READ has invited international publishers and artists to show their artist books parallel to abc.
