This autumn Live at LICA will present a retrospective look at Ben Turnbull’s striking visual arts
practice from the last decade. The exhibition will feature over 20 major sculptural and wall-
based works alongside newly commissioned pieces and a publication with an essay by
Richard Dyer.
Fascinated by the dominance of American culture, Turnbull’s work adopts childrens’
playthings, cult items and symbolic objects for its distinctive aesthetic. The objects are
manipulated and combined with satire to comment on war, violence, the depths of
patriotism and the paranoid state of society. The artist’s passion for American culture often
leads to America and Americana finding themselves in the firing line of his ‘angry pop
cultural statements’.
The work requires a multi-skilled approach that includes mould-making, carving, carpentry
and collage; every aspect of the highly finished work is undertaken by the artist himself. It is
no coincidence that a recent Turnbull show was named A.C.M.E. after the fake Loony Tunes
supply store, A Company that Makes Everything; an apt metaphor for Turnbull who operates
every station of the production line in the making of his work. Despite the toy factory feel and
finish of the work, you are never far from Turnbull’s scathing commentary on society.
