"My drawings tell the epic tale of the inhabitants of Earth and, simply, what they do. My drawings report the disparate encounters of humans and animal-like humans, as if there is a difference. Clementine Gallery presents the New York solo debut of Robyn O'Neil entitled Even If It Shall Break Them: The Prelude to a Solid Hope for Something Better.
Robyn O'Neil's snowscenes are populated with an odd array of characters and objects including ape men, space ships, fir trees, and weather balloons. Precisely drawn in graphite, O'Neil's landscapes investigate evolution, apocalypse, natural disaster, and extinction. Against a backdrop of ominous space ships, fierce weather conditions, and hazardous terrain, Yetis stroll together and burrow in the snow while men in jogging suits do exercises. Risking their lives simply by attempting their daily rituals, the characters in O'Neil's drawings underscore the bizarre nature of mundane living. "There are potent, scary things around every corner and some people just want to do some calisthenics", writes O'Neil, "I wish I were one of those people." Vaguely reminiscent of science fiction comics and school textbooks from the Fifties, O'Neil's expertly drafted compositions possess a familiar quality which is at odds with their surreal content.

Even if it Shall Break Them: The Prelude to a Solid Hope for Something Better is the precursor for Robyn O'Neil's Fall 2003 exhibition and residency at ArtPace, a Foundation for Contemporary Art, San Antonio, TX. O'Neil is 25-years-old and lives and works in Houston, TX. She recently received an Artadia grant (April 2003). Earlier this year, her drawings were featured in "Come Forward: Emerging Art in Texas" at The Dallas Museum of Art.

A reception for the public will be held on Thursday, May 29, 6-8 pm.

The exhibition will run from May 29-June 28, 2003.
