In her photographs, Rousakis depicts ambiguous, unidentifiable forms and environments that radiate a life of their own. As the title suggests, she manipulates existing natural objects and submerges them in water to create a new "nature" of her own design.
My Own Nature
Sandra Gering Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of photographs by
Helen Rousakis from 29 May through 28 June 2003. The images in the
exhibition are from Rousakis' extensive series titled My Own Nature.
In her photographs, Rousakis depicts ambiguous, unidentifiable forms and
environments that radiate a life of their own. As the title suggests, she
manipulates existing natural objects and submerges them in water to create
a new "nature" of her own design. Proceeding like an avid naturalist,
Rousakis documents the life in her watery environments in close-up shots
that seemingly shift between a microscopic and macroscopic world. The
forms in these still lifes are at once familiar and bizarre, beautiful and
grotesque.
This is Rousakis' first solo exhibition. In 1999, she was awarded the
Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award. Her photographs are in numerous
collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
