How They Changed Our Lives - Senators as Working People. The new photography installation presents 113 U.S. Senators of the 109th-110th Senate alongside text highlighting each lawmaker's key legislative achievement.
JERSEY CITY, NJ, Sep. 18, 2012 – A new photography installation exploring the influence of elected officials in shap-
ing our daily lives opens at Mana Contemporary on Sunday, October 7, 2012. How They Changed Our Lives – Senators
as Working People by Bonnie Englebardt Lautenberg presents 113 U.S. Senators of the 109th-110th Senate alongside
text highlighting each lawmaker’s key legislative achievement.
“Being the wife of a United States Senator, I have a front row seat witnessing history being made,” says Lautenberg.
With a 24-hour news cycle, we have greater access to our political figures than ever before. Yet, how many of us re-
ally know the scope of their work? Lautenberg, the wife of New Jersey Senator Frank R. Lautenberg, enjoys a unique
rapport with the members of Senate. Over a six year period, she carefully sought and captured intimate portraits of
our nation’s leaders from both parties. Falling in line with the great American tradition of socio-political photography,
Lautenberg’s candid and approachable portraits showcase the Senators in their simplest function, as public servants
working on behalf of their constituents.
The floor-to-ceiling installation covers the four gallery walls, encompassing the viewer in portraits of these elected
officials. Alphabetically arranged, with all the images of equal size, the balanced installation emphasizes the power
of the whole. The exhibition is a timely statement prior to the November election.
How They Changed Our Lives opens to the public, Sunday, October 7, 2012 from 1:00 to 3:30 PM at Mana Contem-
porary, 888 Newark Avenue, Jersey City, NJ. The exhibition will be on view through Saturday, October 20. For more
