In her latest work, Kate Sully explores the Seven Deadly Sins, she takes the
themes of Covet, Sloth, Envy, Gluttony, Anger, Pride and Lust as her source
and investigates them through a range of photographic, sculptural and mixed
media based work. The result is an extensive and challenging exhibition,
which reflects both the aspirations and sins within contemporary society.
Sully uses the familiar everyday object, the Bag, as her tool to scrutinise
and reveal the ideologies of the Seven Deadly Sins. Our perception of this
functional item is put into question as it takes on a metamorphosis. At
first glance the work appears beautiful and inviting but on closer
inspection its disturbing connotations are exposed.
Through out all the work, the Bag has been subverted and manipulated to
demonstrate the apparent demise of today¹s culture. Sullys work comments on
the over indulgence of western society and our fascination with consumerism
and vanity. As with her work in The Last Supper exhibition at Rotherham Art
Gallery, Sully highlighted our betrayal of earthly riches for those of
artificial worth. Ultimately she seeks to engage the viewer initially with
her deceiving, alluring work and then expose a more sinister underbelly.
Kate lives and works in Yorkshire.
