Surviving. The intensive interaction between the painter and model on the one hand and the struggle with the material and the means of painting on the other is still visible in the finished picture.
The XENIA HAUSNER: ÜberLeben exhibition gives a deep insight into the work of the renowned Austrian painter Xenia Hausner. Recent large-format figurative paintings from various international collections can be seen as well as new works from the artists studio. The heart of the show is an outsized, threatening and breathtaking photo installation made especially for the rotunda in the Essl Museum.
“ÜberLeben” (“Surviving”), the title of the exhibition, accords with a fundamental idea of Xenia Hausner’s work, which is marked by a mysterious ambiguity. Her art is truthful and expresses something existential about life, but at the same time it lives from an enigmatic cast of figures and consciously employed symbolic allusions that escape explicit interpretation. “I attempt to understand or to catch an inner essence. It might be the person in his or her own biography – what one would classically subsume under ‘portrait’ – or it is the person in an invented constellation.” (Xenia Hausner in the exhibition catalogue)
