Yes, Taiwan. Central to the theme of this edition is to explore the current state of Taiwanese contemporary artists and artist-run initiatives. The exhibited works display the spectrum of creative expressions, from personal concerns to the collective cares, of Taiwan's artists. Works that come from day-to-day experiences can simultaneously reveal a glimpse into the overall gestalt of contemporary Taiwanese art.
The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts is holding YES, TAIWAN - 2012 Taiwan Biennial for the third time as part of the Museum's ongoing commitment to document and promote the rich history of Taiwan's fine arts. Central to the theme of the Taiwan Biennial is to explore the current state of Taiwanese contemporary artists and artist-run initiatives. By conducting research and curating exhibitions on the work of Taiwanese contemporary artists, we hope to promote understanding and discussions on issues raised by the exhibition, and in so doing to further our vision and mission.
Following the spirit of the event set forth since the 2010 Taiwan Biennial, YES TAIWAN - 2012 Taiwan Biennial takes an inclusive approach, embracing various art practices by Taiwanese artists of various generations and cultural backgrounds across a wide range of themes, styles, media and scales of production. The artworks exhibited in the 2012 Taiwan Biennial, which are all completed in the last two years, are divided into five categories: “Artists Reflections”, “Exploring the Everyday”, “Addressing Social Issues”, “Evolving Traditions” and “Interdisciplinary Collaboration”. These works are produced by a total of 39 Taiwanese artists/teams. Among these artists/teams, 22 of them are invited to be part of the exhibition; the other 17 are selected from an open, nation-wide call for submissions. These works can be seen to embody some of the key characteristics of Taiwan's visual arts in the last two years.
The works featured in the 2012 Taiwan Biennial can be seen to demonstrate some different approaches to art practice. To be more specific, it appears that whereas some of the exhibiting artists have taken art as a medium of expressing personal ideas and emotions, some are increasingly using art as a form of actualizing people's collective consciousness. It should be noted, however, that the relationship between these two approaches is a dialectical, rather than a simply oppositional one. On the one hand, although some of the artists have tended to focus on details of everyday life and personal experience, such observations often point to a broader set of issues that have had a collective dimension of human lives at a certain historical conjuncture. On the other hand, artwork which serves as an active agent of social change often feeds back to the artist at a personal level. Besides, some of the exhibiting artists engage in ongoing pursuit of aesthetic refinement or reassessment of traditional aesthetic values. All these different approaches and directions are products of continuous accumulation of artistic experiences which have been informed by Taiwan's unique social and cultural environment, and will in turn broaden our cultural vision and creativity, and to further enrich the development of Taiwan's fine arts.
YES, TAIWAN - 2012 Taiwan Biennial documents the richness of Taiwan's visual arts. It serves also as a platform of exchange of views and knowledge among all Taiwanese artists. We hope that by documenting and exhibiting the artistic currents of our time, this event will help to promote in-depth exploration and discussion related to the historical, cultural and artistic contexts of the works, as well as active inquiry into signifying practice and the nature of contemporary art. Hopefully these works will, in the future, also become a valuable source of material for anyone intending to research any aspects of Taiwanese fine arts.
